Our Philosophy
New Garden Yoga studio is
a return to the tradition of small yoga classes that allow each
teacher to know you personally, in the context of your yoga studies.
The maximum number of students is fifteen per class, although most
classes will have between six to twelve students in them.

We offer instruction in
the Eight Limbs of Yoga which includes social ethics, personal
practices, postures, breathing exercises, concentration, and
meditation. We hope that people from all walks of life will
participate in our classes because Yoga is beneficial to all who
sincerely want to practice it.

Our approach to training
the body and breath in the postures is called alignment-based
teaching. Whether being guided through a flowing combination of
poses or staying for several minutes in a single posture, we know
that carefully aligning the bones, muscles and joints will not only
be safer but will also lead to a positive energetic affect on all of
the systems of your body.

We will guide you to
consciously connect with your breath in both the active postures and
in the breathing exercises because your breath directly affects your
energy level, mind, and emotions.

Learning how to practice Yoga is an individual process that most
often happens in a group setting. Because each student has
specific strengths and weaknesses, our teachers are trained to
recognize, address, and support individual issues during a group
class. If you have a condition that you wish to keep private,
please inform your teacher several minutes before the class
begins so that they can design how to be discreet
while addressing your needs.

The traditional
student-teacher relationship is important to us. This kind of
interaction requires faith in Yoga, mutual respect, patience, and
healthy communication.

When Yoga is genuinely
experienced, your mind becomes calmer. You perceive your world with
more clarity. You feel less isolated within yourself and more
interconnected with others both near and far. This ‘yoga effect’
often occurs as a result of the physical practices.

There are other
traditional practices that result in the ‘yoga effect’. One of these
practices is Seated Meditation. While always a part of traditional
yoga, seated meditation is now more commonly associated with
Buddhist practice. At New Garden Yoga we will re-integrate this
important method into our schedule of classes and events. We
encourage you to eventually broaden your definition of Yoga to
include the self-understanding, compassion, and patience that result
from daily meditation sessions at the studio and at home.
